What does an orthopedist do?

A good orthopedist in Warsaw Mokotów

The musculoskeletal system in humans is a complex structure responsible for movement and maintaining body posture. It consists of several main components: bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. All these elements work together to enable movement, respond to external stimuli, and perform physical actions. The musculoskeletal system is crucial for daily functioning and requires proper care and attention. Unfortunately, the condition of the musculoskeletal system can deteriorate with age, especially for individuals who work in jobs that strain this system or participate in demanding sports.

An orthopedist is a physician specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders. The main areas of focus for an orthopedist include:

  • Bones: fractures, osteoporosis, bone tumors, deformities, and other conditions
  • Joints: arthritis, joint injuries, osteoarthritis, joint disorders
  • Muscles, tendons, and ligaments: injuries, inflammation, tears, strains
  • Degenerative diseases: joint degeneration
  • Deformities: scoliosis, valgus deformity, varus deformity, and other musculoskeletal deformities
  • Pediatric conditions: congenital developmental disorders, foot or hip deformities

Many orthopedists specialize in surgery, performing operations such as joint replacement, fracture stabilization, or arthroscopy. Orthopedists may also collaborate with physical therapists to develop rehabilitation plans for patients recovering from injuries, surgeries, or other musculoskeletal conditions.

What conditions does an orthopedist treat?

– good orthopedist Warsaw privately, orthopedist Mokotów

An orthopedist is a specialist who focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment (both conservative and surgical) of the musculoskeletal system and its components. They assist with cases involving congenital or acquired postural defects, developmental disorders in children, musculoskeletal disorders, and injuries such as dislocations and fractures. The orthopedist plans and implements pharmacological treatment for conditions that require it, issues referrals for additional tests (e.g., ultrasound, X-rays, computed tomography), and consults with specialists in other fields, such as neurologists or physiotherapists.

The list of conditions that an orthopedist deals with includes:
  • osteitis and arthritis,
  • back pain and diseases (degenerative changes, herniated disc),
  • hip disorders,
  • degenerative changes and bone tumors,
  • congenital defects (hip dysplasia) and acquired defects (flat feet, bunions),
  • postural defects (scoliosis, lordosis, kyphosis),
  • lower limb deformities (varus feet, valgus knees, clubfoot, knock knees),
  • conditions related to overuse injuries (carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow).

Orthopedics vs. Traumatology – Differences

Orthopedist Mokotów, good orthopedist Warsaw privately

Orthopedists and traumatologists are specialists who often work together, and their fields of medicine overlap. However, there are some fundamental differences between orthopedics and traumatology. A traumatologist specializes in the treatment of injuries, such as fractures, dislocations, ligament, tendon, or muscle injuries, and their consequences. They work with patients who have experienced traffic accidents, falls, or sports injuries, primarily focusing on surgical interventions aimed at repairing damage from injuries, such as fracture stabilization or ligament reconstruction.

Although orthopedic problems are often associated with older age, many conditions can also occur at a very young age—even in newborns.

What are the main orthopedic diseases that occur in children?

1) CLUBFOOT

The condition known as clubfoot is one of the most common foot disorders. Its cause is not entirely understood, but it can be immediately recognized by its characteristic appearance at birth. The equinus position of the foot causes the foot to be flexed downward at the ankle joint, with the heel raised upward. The varus position of the foot directs the foot (especially its front part) outward. If treatment is initiated at an early stage in a child’s life and the deformity is not complex, a non-invasive treatment method may suffice, involving restoring the normal appearance and functionality of the foot through the use of plaster casts, and at a later stage, special braces. More complex cases may require surgical intervention to allow for normal movement and restore the foot’s healthy appearance.

2) POSTURAL DEFECTS

Postural defects in children and adolescents are quite common and can arise from various causes, such as congenital abnormalities, muscular imbalances, improper habits, or poor environmental conditions.

Early identification and treatment of postural defects are crucial for preventing further complications and the entrenchment of abnormalities. Physiotherapy, appropriate exercises, orthopedic shoe inserts, and education on proper posture are fundamental remedial methods. In some cases, surgical treatment may be necessary. If you notice any abnormalities in your child’s posture, it is advisable to consult an orthopedic doctor.

Here are some common postural defects and lower limb deformities in children:

  • Scoliosis – a lateral curvature of the spine. It can be structural (related to permanent changes in the spine) or functional (resulting from other factors, such as leg length discrepancy).
  • Kyphosis – commonly referred to as “hunchback.” It is an excessive backward curvature of the spine in the thoracic region.
  • Lordosis – excessive forward curvature of the spine in the lumbar region.
  • Flat feet – characterized by the disappearance or lowering of the inner arch of the foot. It can be longitudinal (loss of the longitudinal arch of the foot) or transverse (loss of the transverse arch of the foot at the toes).
  • Genu valgum – also known as “knock-knees.” The knees are directed toward each other, while the feet are spaced apart.
  • Genu varum – referred to as “bow legs.” The knees are spaced apart, while the feet move closer together.
  • Anteroflexion – excessive leaning forward, usually due to a lack of abdominal muscle strength.
  • Head posture defects – the head may be shifted forward (a common posture when using a computer or phone for extended periods) or tilted to the side.
  • Shoulder asymmetry – one shoulder may be higher than the other, often due to muscular imbalance or scoliosis. Asymmetry is common in students who carry bags or backpacks on one shoulder only.

Pediatric orthopedic assessment

A child’s health assessment is one of the ways to detect any abnormalities and conditions present in a child’s body early on. An orthopedic assessment allows for evaluating the functionality and performance of the musculoskeletal system in young children and diagnosing any deviations. Regular examinations provide the opportunity to correct acquired postural defects that may not cause any discomfort in the early stages but can contribute to degenerative changes and improper functioning of the organs in the long term. It is advisable to conduct the first assessment after the child turns four years old.

Parents play a significant role in the health of their children’s musculoskeletal systems. Observing the child after starting school and during periods of rapid growth is crucial. Acquired postural defects typically develop during this time, largely due to incorrect habits—such as carrying a backpack on one shoulder, poor sitting posture at a desk, or consistently leaning the head forward while using a computer or smartphone. Therefore, it is recommended to conduct a postural examination between the ages of 11 and 14.

When should you see an orthopedist?

There are many situations and symptoms that may indicate the need for a consultation with an orthopedist. Here are some of them:

  • Persistent pain in the joints, bones, or muscles that does not improve after several days of rest or with the use of over-the-counter pain relief medications.
  • Limited range of motion in the joints, such as difficulty bending or straightening limbs.
  • Deformities of the joints or other parts of the musculoskeletal system.
  • Fractures, dislocations, or other injuries requiring evaluation and treatment.
  • Chronic back pain or discomfort felt in that area.
  • Joints that are swollen, red, hot, or show other signs of inflammation.
  • Disturbing sounds coming from the joints during movement, such as creaking or popping.
  • Problems with walking, pain while walking, or difficulty taking steps.
  • Postural defects in children or adults that seem to worsen.
  • The need for evaluation of custom orthotic inserts, shoes, or orthopedic devices.
  • Problems with balance or motor coordination.
  • Skin changes around the joints, such as redness, bruising, lumps, or deformities.
  • Osteoporosis or the risk of developing it.
  • If another doctor (e.g., a family doctor) has referred you for an orthopedic consultation.

If you experience any of the above symptoms or have concerns regarding your musculoskeletal system, it is advisable to consult an orthopedist. In many cases, early intervention can prevent further complications and help you return to full functionality more quickly.

What procedures are performed in the orthopedic office?

Good orthopedist Warsaw privately

Procedures performed by orthopedists aim to alleviate painful discomfort or restore full functionality to the musculoskeletal system.

The list of procedures performed by specialists is extensive, but the most popular include:

Intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid

Intra-articular injection of platelet-rich plasma

Joint aspiration

Intra-articular injection

Good orthopedic specialist privately in Warsaw, Mokotów

An intra-articular injection involves injecting a preparation directly into the joint using a syringe. The injected substance can be hyaluronic acid, platelet-rich plasma, or a medication aimed at restoring proper joint function and alleviating pain. Orthopedic specialists perform this procedure under ultrasound guidance to ensure precise delivery of active substances.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the human body, and its deficiency can lead to various ailments. An intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid is particularly recommended in cases of severe pain or swelling in the knee, difficulties with limb mobility, including stiffness, weakness, joint pain, and sensations of friction or cracking in the joints.

Platelet-rich plasma is obtained through the centrifugation of the patient’s blood, which separates the blood into red blood cells and two types of plasma—poorly platelet-rich and platelet-rich. The components found in platelet-rich plasma have strong regenerative properties and stimulate the repair processes of joints, muscles, and tendons.

ORTHOPEDIC DIAGNOSTICS

1) Preluxation Ultrasound

  1. Preluxation ultrasound is an ultrasound examination aimed at assessing the hip joints in infants. Its primary goal is the early detection and evaluation of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), which involves the abnormal formation of the hip joint. In this context, dysplasia refers to improper development, which can lead to joint instability and, in severe cases, dislocation (the joint coming out of its socket). Early detection of DDH is crucial, as early interventions (such as wearing orthopedic braces) can effectively correct the problem and prevent long-term complications.

Preluxation ultrasound is particularly recommended for infants with risk factors for hip dysplasia, such as:

  • abnormal positioning in the womb (e.g., breech),
  • family history of hip dysplasia,
  • other factors that may indicate an increased risk.

In many countries, including Poland, hip joint ultrasound in infants is a routine screening examination aimed at the early detection and treatment of hip dysplasia.

2) Bone and Joint Ultrasound

Bone and joint ultrasound is a diagnostic technique that uses ultrasound to image the soft tissues around bones and joints.

It helps in detecting:

  • inflammatory conditions,
  • tears,
  • degeneration,
  • other changes in the structure of tendons, muscles, and joints.

Bone and joint ultrasound can assist in identifying and characterizing cysts and other masses in soft tissues, as well as detecting inflammation of the joint capsule.
