Venereologist – What do they do?
Venereology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). It is included in the dermatology specialization program, which is why a venereologist is also a dermatologist.

When should you see a venereologist?
Venereal (STD-related) conditions often manifest as inflammation, skin changes, or lesions on the mucous membranes in the intimate area. If you experience any of the following symptoms—redness, pimples, blisters, ulcers on the external genitalia, itching, burning in this area, or abnormal discharge from the urethra—you should consult a venereologist. Most of the diseases treated by a venereologist are sexually transmitted infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. The most common STDs include: syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, candidiasis, genital warts, bacterial vaginosis, herpes, trichomoniasis, and ureaplasma.

What happens during a venereologist appointment?
A venereologist’s tasks include diagnosis, treatment, as well as educating and raising patients’ awareness about sexually transmitted infections. The appointment process is similar to a visit to a dermatology office. The doctor takes a detailed medical history regarding your symptoms, medications, and any coexisting conditions. Next, they perform a venereological examination, carefully inspecting any lesions. The doctor may also order additional laboratory tests. Finally, they establish a treatment plan and prescribe the appropriate medications.

Why is it important not to delay visiting a venereologist?
In our society, problems in the intimate areas are often considered embarrassing. As a result, patients may feel uncomfortable and either avoid or delay visiting a venereologist. In fact, there is no reason to be embarrassed—STDs need treatment, and ignoring symptoms can lead to serious complications, such as infertility.
It’s also important to remember that lesions in the genital area are not always caused by sexually transmitted infections. They can be symptoms of other conditions, such as allergies, cancer, or systemic diseases like psoriasis, lichen sclerosus, or lichen planus.
