A clinical geneticist specializes in genetic counseling and the diagnosis of genetic diseases or congenital developmental disorders in humans, arising from functional or structural abnormalities in the genetic material of parents and/or the child. Geneticists are specialists to whom couples with a history of hereditary diseases turn when planning a child to assess the risk of an abnormal genetic factor in their offspring. Accurate diagnostics also help determine the cause of fertility issues, enabling effective treatment tailored to the specific case.
A genetic consultation is the first meeting with a geneticist, during which the patient’s family tree is analyzed. Proper analysis of the family, including the diseases that individual members have had or died from, is crucial in gathering information about the patient’s lineage. This process allows us to determine how a trait or disease is passed down in the family, which in turn helps assess the patient’s risk of developing a specific disease or inheriting a particular trait.
