What conditions does a pediatric urologist treat?

What is urotherapy?

Urotherapy is a type of behavioral therapy that addresses children’s problems with urinary incontinence and overactive bladder. Its aim is to develop a proper habit of urination. During this therapy, children and their caregivers gain valuable knowledge about how the urinary system functions. Maintaining correct posture during urination and changing everyday habits can help eliminate incontinence. Poor habits include, for example, holding in urine during the day or drinking too many fluids before bedtime.

When can pediatric urotherapy be used?

  • When a child continues bedwetting after the age of 5,
  • When a child starts bedwetting despite not having had any previous problems,
  • When a child leaks urine or feels a frequent urge to urinate,
  • When incontinence occurs during laughter or sneezing,
  • When a child has been diagnosed with anatomical abnormalities in the urinary system.

What is uroflowmetry?

Uroflowmetry is a painless and non-invasive urological examination. Its purpose is to measure the flow of urine during urination. The patient urinates into a special device that analyzes the speed and amount of fluid passed per second, as well as total volume. The examination also includes an ultrasound assessment of the volume of urine remaining in the bladder after urination. It can be expanded to include an analysis of the pelvic floor muscles, known as EMG. Uroflowmetry is interpreted by a urologist, who can then recommend an appropriate treatment method based on the results.

Other diagnostic tests for the genitourinary system include ultrasound examinations of the bladder, testicles, or kidneys, as well as cystoscopy and urography.
